Factors that determine your score in the interview

Your interview marks in UPSC Civil Services is independent of your mains marks. A candidate may score high marks in mains and may get low score in Interview and the vice versa.
The duration of UPSC Interview is roughly about 25 minutes for each candidate. The Interview Board consists of 5 members.
Many candidates get into service, solely based on the interview score, while some others fail to get a place in the merit list based on the poor score in the interview.
A candidate can score as high as 80% in the interview. (220/275)

What are the dos and don’ts?

Be honest. Do not lie. Accept the fact that, the members in the board are more experienced and well knowledgeable than you.
Be formal. The UPSC requires you to be formal. Be properly and neatly dressed. Follow basic etiquettes. Ask for permission to enter the room. Wish the board members. Thank them when necessary. Do not use causal phrases or language (like yah, buddy etc)
The Interview is not a Question and Answer session. So do not give yes or no answers. Establish an interaction with the board members.
The interview board does not test your knowledge or facts, which has been already tested in your mains. But you are expected to remember the basic facts.
The main objective of the Interview Board is to test your suitability to be a part of Indian Civil Service.
The interview board is totally just. And would assess you based on your DAF and your performance in the board.
Do not try to create any sympathy, based on your Back ground. It would be counterproductive. Similarly, do not boast about your achievements.
Be attentive to the questions asked. Listen to the questions without interference. Begin answering a question only after the question is completed.
Your gestures and postures do make some difference. Practise yourself in-front of a large mirror.
Do not enter into a heated argument with the board to prove your point. However, you can explain your opinion firmly and politely.
In the process of the interview, focus on the present question which is being asked. Do not be thinking about the first question while, you are answering the fifth.
Your communication ability does matter. But do not be worried if you not very fluent. It would be sufficient if you could express yourself in a simple manner.
Always be smiling, pleasant and humble.
The preparation for the interview should begin, as early as you begin your preparation for UPSC.
Attending mock interviews will help you to correct some mistakes.
