1.      Consider the following statements about POCSO ACT:

1)     The POCSO Act can be called a complete code in itself

2)     The provisions of POCSO ACT are based on the gender.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

a)     1 only

b)     2 only

c)      Both 1 and 2

d)     Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: D

Explanation:

POCSO ACT:

·         The Act took effect in 2012.

·         The Act has been enacted to protect children from offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography and provide for establishment of Special Courts for trial of such offences and related matters and incidents.

·         These provisions were not covered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or the Goa Children's Act, 2003, which was the only specific piece of child abuse legislation before the POCSO Act 2012.

·         The act for the first time was amended in 2019 by The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act, 2019.

·         This amendment to the Act enhanced the punishment to include death penalty for aggravated penetrative sexual assault of the child.

·         The POCSO Act cannot be called a complete code in itself and provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, Indian Penal Code, 1860, Juvenile Justice Act, and Information Technology Act, 2000 overlap and encapsulate the procedure and specify the offences.

·         The Act is gender neutral and regards the best interests and welfare of the child as a matter of paramount importance at every stage so as to ensure the healthy physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of the child.

2.      Consider the following statements about

1)     It is the only leader-led forum at which all key Indo-Pacific partners meet to discuss political, security and economic challenges facing the region.

2)     India is one of the founding members of the East Asia Summit.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

a)     1 only

b)     2 only

c)      Both 1 and 2

d)     Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: C

Explanation:

The East Asia Summit (EAS):

·         The East Asia Summit (EAS) is the Indo-Pacific's premier forum for strategic dialogue.

·         It is the only leader-led forum at which all key Indo-Pacific partners meet to discuss political, security and economic challenges facing the region, and has an important role to play in advancing closer regional cooperation.

·         The concept of East Asia Grouping was first promoted in 1991 by the then Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir bin Mohamad.

·         The EAS has 18 members - the ten ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) along with Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States.

·         India:

o   India is one of the founding members of the East Asia Summit.

·         ASEAN leads the forum, and the chair position rotates between ASEAN Member States annually.

3.      Which of the following statement is incorrect?

a)     Data residency means restricting the flow of data from origin country to another.

b)     Data residency refers to the place where data is stored.

c)      Data residency requirements may compel organizations to change where their data resides.

d)     Data localization is the action of complying with data residency requirements.

Answer: A

Explanation:

Data Localization vs. Data Residency:

·         Data localization and data residency are two terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, although they have slightly different meanings.

·         Data residency refers to the place where data is stored. Data residency requirements may compel organizations to change where their data resides.

·         Data localization is the action of complying with data residency requirements.

·         Data localization is the practice of keeping data within the region it originated from.

·         Data localization is the practice of keeping data within the region it originated from.

4.      What are the effects of increasing melting of ice caps?

1)     Thawing permafrost amplifies warming

2)     Decreases the salinity

3)     Melting sea ice can influence weather

4)     Increase Albedo

Select the correct answer from given below codes:

a)     1, 2 and 3 only

b)     2 and 3 only

c)      2, 3 and 4 only

d)     1, 2, 3 and 4

Answer: A

Explanation:

Effects of melting of ice caps:

·         Loss of ice means more heat is absorbed: Albedo is a measure of how well a surface reflects sunlight. Snow-covered sea ice has a high albedo and reflects 85% of sunlight. But the open water revealed as ice melts is darker and absorbs more – reflecting just 7%. The less sunlight the Earth’s surface reflects the more heat the planet absorbs.

·         Thawing permafrost amplifies warming: Rising Arctic temperatures are thawing once-frozen ground in the Arctic – known as “permafrost”. Scientists are concerned that CO2 and methane released from the carbon-rich permafrost could cause additional warming by adding to greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere.

·         Decreases the salinity: Polar ice caps are made of fresh water, so adding more fresh water without adding more salt makes the ocean water less saline. This can cause problems for organisms that are well adapted to the very salty ocean waters.

·         Melting sea ice can influence winter weather: As temperatures rise faster in the Arctic than at lower latitudes, this changes large-scale temperature and pressure gradients – which may have consequences for extreme weather in the northern hemisphere.

5.      Consider the following statements about coronal holes:

1)     Coronal holes are regions on the Sun’s surface where the fast solar winds are spurted out into the outer space.

2)     Coronal holes can last longer during the solar maximum.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

a)     1 only

b)     2 only

c)      Both 1 and 2

d)     Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: A

Explanation:

Coronal Holes:

Coronal holes are regions on the Sun’s surface where the fast solar winds are spurted out into the outer space. Since they have little solar material, they have lower temperature. Therefore, they appear much darker than their surrounding regions. In these dark regions, magnetic field is open to interplanetary space, sending solar material in a high-speed stream of solar winds.

The cause of the coronal holes is unknown. They can last between several weeks to months. This common phenomenon occurs throughout the solar cycle that lasts for over 11 years. Coronal holes can last longer during the solar minimum – a period when the Sun’s activity is significantly low.
